Reflection By Marisa Gottlieb

Reflection Marisa Gottlieb Throughout the semester, we have dove into the term from Robert Coles, Doing Documentary Work, location.  Location is a term that refers to the idea of discovering someone's past and how their past experiences impact their views.  Robert Coles term of location connects to Elizabeth Barret's film Stranger with a Camera and how Elizabeth Barret's location impacts her views on the murder of Hugh O'Connor.  Her location is both an insider to her town and an outsider.  To me, this was very critical while watching her film to remember that she had two…

Coles and Nichols in Agents of Change

Both Nichols and Coles have perspectives on Agents of Change with their ideas.  For voice, both say that you must fairly represent the people in the film, and give them a voice.  There are two sides to every story, so hearing both sides is very important and thats what these scholars are saying.  Additionally, both say that every person has different backgrounds growing up, their location, and this can impact their views on the protests.  Music was a huge factor in this film as well.  From the music, you can see the location of the documentarians.…

Nichols reading

In the writing, a section that stood out to me was on page 46.  This section talks about how “the voice of the documentary is not restricted to what is verbally said…” (Nichols 46).  The voices in a documentary speaks with all the ways the filmmaker made the film. There are a few factors that come in when deciding what sounds to us.  1. The Environment

I have taken multiple environmental science classes during my time in school, and intend to take more.  The environment is something I am passionate about and wanting to make a change. Something that is a big problem in the environment are plastic straws.  They are evil, actually.  Plastic straws contribute a lot to ocean pollution.  Approximately 9 million straws end up the oceans every year.  This is terrible.  Although people try and recycle straws, they usually end up in landfills. Plastic straws hurt animals that live in the water, including turtles.  Over 100 million sea…

Location

Location is how one looks at something in terms of their own perspective.  As Robert Coles says in his 1997 book Doing Documentary Work,“How a particular writer or researcher decides to commit himself or herself with respect to those others being studied, watched, heard, made the subject of a writing initiative” (Coles, 1997, 32).  This quote explains how authors, although write something based on their location, must also pay respect to what is being studied.
